The Spanish Government’s strategy expressly includes the Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre among the major infrastructures intended to strengthen the country’s scientific and technological capabilities.
The Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre (CIIAE) has been included in Spain’s Deep Tech Strategy 2026–2030, approved by the Council of Ministers on 19 May 2026. The document identifies the Cáceres-based centre as one of the country’s leading scientific infrastructures that will contribute to the development of frontier technologies and to strengthening Spain’s technological leadership.
Spain’s Deep Tech Strategy 2026–2030, led by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, plans to mobilise more than €8 billion by 2030. Its aim is to turn the country’s scientific capabilities into innovation, business activity, high-quality employment, strategic autonomy, and solutions to major social and environmental challenges.
CIIAE is cited under the strategy’s first pillar, which focuses on strengthening Spain’s scientific and technological capabilities by promoting and consolidating infrastructure with national and international reach. Alongside the Extremadura-based centre, the document highlights initiatives such as Spain Neurotech, the IFMIF-DONES accelerator and the Hadron Therapy Accelerator.
This inclusion recognises CIIAE’s strategic role in one of the ten priority scientific and technological fields identified by the strategy: technologies for sustainability and clean energy. Within this field, energy storage is essential to enable greater integration of renewable energy, improve the flexibility of the energy system, and support progress towards a climate-neutral economy.
