AIRES – Innovation in energy storage and smart energy management for renewable self-consumption installations

The AIRES project aims to drive innovation in the field of energy storage and optimise the management of renewable energy systems for self-consumption in the Spain–Portugal cross-border region.

To this end, joint research activities will be carried out, focusing on analysing the state of the art in energy storage technologies and identifying advanced energy management tools. Based on this knowledge, real-world application scenarios will be defined, within which innovative systems will be designed, scaled and implemented; these will be validated through two pilot initiatives: one based on electric batteries to be implemented in the province of Badajoz, and another focused on hydrogen production and storage to be carried out in Portugal.

In addition, the project will develop a digital energy management tool supported by artificial intelligence, capable of optimising consumption based on variables such as weather conditions or prices on the Iberian electricity market.

AIRES also envisages the transfer of knowledge to the business sector through training initiatives and the strengthening of collaboration between companies and research centres, contributing to the creation of an innovation ecosystem centred on energy storage.
