AGROTERMIA addresses two major current challenges: improving the efficiency of bioenergy (biogas) through innovative energy storage solutions and promoting the circular economy by reusing organic waste. Its main objective is to drive the circular economy and the energy transition in Extremadura by developing and industrializing encapsulated phase-change materials (bio-PCMs) based on bio-based compounds derived from agro-industrial byproducts. These materials are optimized for mesophilic biodigesters through (i) validation of local raw materials, (ii) synthesis and advanced characterization of PCMs (30–40 °C), and (iii) design of a production/purification process for raw materials from Extremadura. Its non-technical nature can be easily explained: we will use agricultural waste from Extremadura to manufacture materials that store heat and can automatically maintain biogas tanks at the appropriate and optimal temperature. This will increase renewable energy production (more biogas) and make organic waste management more profitable and environmentally friendly. The project is fully aligned with Extremadura’s RIS3 smart specialization priorities and the objectives of the European Union’s Decarbonization and Energy Transition Strategy. In the long term, the results could be applied not only to biodigesters but also to other systems requiring thermal control within moderate ranges (e.g., biotechnological fermenters and passive greenhouse climate control), positioning Extremadura as a leader in sustainable agro-energy innovation.
